Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What type of life insurance should I consider?

It depends on what you are protecting and for how long. Term life covers a set number of years and is often used for income replacement or a mortgage. Whole life is permanent and can build cash value. Final expense is a small whole life policy aimed at funeral and end-of-life costs. Charlie can help you match the type to your goal rather than starting with a product.

How much life insurance do I need?

A common starting point is to add up income you want to replace, remaining debts like a mortgage, childcare or education costs and expected final expenses, then subtract savings and any coverage you already have. There is no single formula that fits every family, so it helps to talk it through with a person who can ask the right questions.

Eligibility and health

Can I get life insurance without a medical exam?

Some products offer no-exam pathways that rely on health questions and data checks instead of a physical, while others require an exam. Availability depends on the insurer, the product, your age and the coverage amount. No-exam options are not guaranteed for everyone.

Does my health affect my rate?

Usually yes. Age, tobacco use and health history are common factors in how insurers price coverage and decide eligibility. Well-managed conditions do not automatically disqualify you, but they can affect the products and rates available.

Can I be declined for coverage?

It is possible with medically underwritten and simplified issue policies, which consider your health. Guaranteed issue final expense policies generally accept applicants within an age range without health questions, in exchange for a waiting period and higher cost per dollar of coverage.

Final expense and burial

What is final expense insurance?

Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy designed to help cover funeral, burial or cremation and other end-of-life costs. It is typically easier to qualify for than larger policies and is often purchased by older adults who want to leave money set aside for these specific expenses.

Is burial insurance different from final expense insurance?

The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably in the market. On this site, the final expense page focuses on the insurance product and how it works, while the burial insurance page leans into funeral planning, funeral and cremation costs and related Minnesota consumer considerations.

How much does a funeral cost in Minnesota?

There is no single price, because it depends on burial versus cremation, the service, and the provider. Funeral homes are required to give itemized pricing, so the best approach is to price out the specific choices you want. Our funeral cost guide explains the categories to compare.

Coverage types

What is the difference between term and whole life?

Term life lasts for a chosen period such as 10, 20 or 30 years and generally costs less for the same death benefit while it is active. Whole life is permanent, can build cash value and typically costs substantially more than comparable term coverage. Which fits depends on how long you need protection and your budget.

What is cash value?

Cash value is a feature of permanent policies like whole life. A portion of your premium can build up over time on a tax-deferred basis, and you may be able to borrow against it, though loans reduce the death benefit if not repaid. It builds slowly in the early years.

Should I keep my employer life insurance?

Employer coverage is a helpful benefit but is often modest and usually ends when you leave the job. Many people supplement it with an individual policy they own and control, so their coverage is not tied to their employment.
